Early Life and Family Jane Austen, a literary prodigy, was born on December 16, 1775, in Stevenson, Hampshire, England. She was the daughter of George Austen, a prominent clergyman, and Cassandra Leigh, a woman of means. Jane's maternal grandfather was a well-educated cleric.
