Early Life and Family James Joyce, the celebrated novelist, was born on February 2, 1882, in Brighton Square, Dublin, Ireland. He was the eldest of ten children, born to John Stanislaus Joyce and Mary Jane Murray. His father's financial struggles and his mother's musical talents shaped his upbringing.
