Displacement as Ego-Defense Mechanism
Displacement is an ego-defense mechanism that allows individuals to cope with anxiety by redirecting their impulses or emotions from a threatening object or person to a "safer target." When the original object of their emotions is inaccessible or feels too risky to confront, individuals discharge their pent-up feelings onto another person or object that seems less threatening. Displacement acts as a way to release or alleviate emotional tension. Example 1: A person who is frustrated and angry with their boss for constantly criticizing their work may refrain from expressing their true feelings in the workplace due to fear of consequences. Instead, they come home and unleash their anger on their family members, venting their frustration on their loved ones who appear to be less threatening.
